'Mission to Moon': SpaceX accepts cryptocurrency Dogecoin for satellite launch.

Elon Musk's commercial rocket company SpaceX will launch the "DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon," which will accept payment in the meme-inspired cryptocurrency dogecoin."In the first quarter of next year, SpaceX plans to launch Doge-1 satellite on the moon."

In a statement released by Geometric Energy, SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales Tom Ochinero said, "This project would demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth orbit and lay the groundwork for interplanetary commerce."

Musk said on Twitter in April that SpaceX would put a "literal Dogecoin on the literal moon."

When Musk appeared as a guest host on "Saturday Night Live" on Sunday, he referred to Dogecoin as a "hustle," and it lost more than a third of its value.

Thanks to Musk's tweets this year, the once-obscure digital currency, which began as a social media joke, has become a speculator's dream.

According to crypto data tracker CoinGecko.com, Dogecoin has risen by more than 800 percent in the last month and is now the fourth-largest digital currency with a market capitalization of $73 billion.

On Thursday, it surpassed $0.74 as a new high.

Tesla Inc, whose CEO is Elon Musk, announced in February that it had purchased $1.5 billion in bitcoin and will soon embrace it as a form of payment for its electric vehicles, a significant step toward mainstream adoption that sent bitcoin to a record high of nearly $62,000.
