How are American President and Vice President Elected?

The President’s election and the United States’ vice president are unique, unlike many other democratic elections. It is not a direct election by American citizens of the United States. Caucuses

Delegates

But it is often already reached and known well before the national conventions take place. In case no majority is reached in advance, the national convention selects the presidential candidate.


General Election Campaigning

Once the nominee for each political party is chosen, the presidential candidates go head-to-head campaigning in various parts of the country. They explain their plans and views to people, perform rallies and debates to pull voters’ support.


Electoral College

The voters cast their votes at the voting place for their preferred candidate on election day. The voters elect their President and Vice President indirectly by electors through the Electoral College process. States get an allocation of electors based on their seats in the House of Representatives and Senate.

Washington, DC, has the advantage of the allocation of three electors. Other US territories don’t get any seats. Based on 435 House of Representatives seats plus 100 Senate seats plus 3 for Washington DC, there are 538 electors in total. Once the ballots have been cast, all votes go to a statewide tally. 48 American states and Washington DC use “the winner takes all procedures,” where the election winner receives all the electors in that state. There are exceptions in Maine and Nebraska because they follow a proportional system.

The winning candidate needs to “win” at least 270 electors to become the President. Voting at the Electoral College takes place in the weeks, the winning candidate is usually declared on the night of the election.

First, the Vice President is sworn in, followed by the President on the Inauguration Day on January 20 at the US Capitol building in Washington DC. Both recite the oath of office and officially become President and Vice President. The tradition has been used since the late 18th century.
