Elon Musk's SpaceX wins a cloud contract with Google for Starlink internet connectivity.
Bengaluru: Elon Musk's SpaceX which has launched a slew of Starlink satellites to provide high-speed internet, has signed a contract with Google to provide cloud services.
The space rocket manufacturer will instal ground stations in Google's data centres that will connect to the Starlink satellites, allowing Google Cloud to provide fast and reliable internet services. Enterprise customers will be able to use this service in the second half of 2021, according to the search giant.
The SpaceX-Google partnership comes at a time when cloud computing services are in high demand, with Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. leading the pack. Due to an increase in demand for 5G connectivity, cloud providers have also entered the telecom market.
The cloud company of Google accounts for about 7 percent of its total income from the recent profit report.
Microsoft signed a similar deal with SpaceX in October to connect its Azure cloud computing platform to Starlink.
Privately held SpaceX, which is known for its astronaut capsules and reusable rockets, is ramping up production of satellites for Starlink, a network of hundreds of internet-bearing satellites that Musk hopes would help fund SpaceX's interplanetary ambitions.
