Facebook is rolling out “I got my COVID-19 vaccine” profile frames.
The frames, which come in English and Spanish, were created with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
You can add them to your Facebook profile starting Thursday.
Facebook will show you a summary in News Feed of how many people in your social circle or that you follow are using the frames.
The increased peer pressure from the world’s largest social network comes as worries grow that not enough people want to get vaccinated even as more contagious COVID-19 variants spread.
“Research shows that social norms can have a major impact on people’s attitudes and behaviors when it comes to their health,” Facebook said in a blog post. “We know people are more likely to get a vaccine when they see that many people they trust are doing it.”
President Joe Biden said Monday that 90% of American adults will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccines by April 19, and vaccination sites would be within five miles of people’s homes.
Facebook launched a similar effort last month in the U.K. “In just a few weeks, a quarter of people on Facebook in the UK have already seen a friend or family member use the NHS COVID-19 vaccine profile frame,” the company said.
Last week a dozen state attorneys general called on Facebook and Twitter to take more aggressive action against conspiracy theories, hoaxes and lies that are undermining public confidence in the COVID-19 vaccines.
They cited research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate and Anti-Vax Watch showing that a small number of anti-vaccine accounts are responsible for falsehoods about the safety of the vaccines and these accounts have reached more than 59 million on Facebook, Instagram, Google’s YouTube and Twitter.
Facebook said it has removed millions of pieces of misinformation and labeled more than 167 million pieces of content about COVID-19 and vaccines on Facebook and Instagram.
"Since research shows that the best way to combat vaccine hesitancy is to connect people to reliable information from health experts, we’ve connected over 2 billion people to resources from health authorities," the company said in a statement. "We know that conversations about vaccines tend to be nuanced, so we’re continuing to work with health experts to make sure that our approach and our policies are in the right place."
The profile frames are part of Facebook’s efforts to “help people get credible information, get vaccinated and encourage others to do the same so we can come back together safely,” the company said.
Earlier this month Facebook launched a tool in its COVID-19 Information Center that shows "when and where you can get vaccinated, and gives you a link to make an appointment."
Here’s how to add a COVID-19 vaccine frame to your profile:
- Go to www.facebook.com/profilepicframes.
