In a ransomware case, Canadian police seize Bitcoin worth $28 million from a former government employee.

A Canadian man accused of carrying out dozens of ransomware attacks in 2020 has been extradited to the United States, and his home has been raided for more than $28 million in bitcoin (BTC).

Sebastien Vachon-Desjardins, 34, was charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and wire fraud, deliberate damage to a protected computer, and extortion in a federal court in Florida. A protected computer is one that is only utilised by the United States government or a financial institution.    

Vachon-Desjardins, a former Canadian government IT employee, was arrested in Quebec in January. His residence was raided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who confiscated 719 bitcoins (worth more than $28 million at current values) and $790,000 in Canadian money. According to Canadian media, Vachon-Desjardins admitted to the court that he took over 2,000 bitcoins over his ransomware career.

The arrest coincides with a worldwide campaign against ransomware. President Joe Biden committed in November to use "the full force of the federal government to disrupt hostile cyber activity," and numerous large-scale operations have subsequently brought down ransomware groups, notably Russia's REvil.

Vachon-Desjardins was supposedly a "associate" of the NetWalker ransomware gang, which sells "Ransomware-as-a-Service" (RaaS) to affiliates like Vachon-Desjardins, who then carry out the attack themselves and split the proceeds with the developers.

The Toronto Sun reported that, Vachon-Desjardins was also paid to teach other would-be cybercriminals how to conduct successful attacks.

During the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, NetWalker-created ransomware was frequently utilised against hospitals, emergency services, and other healthcare-related businesses.

If proven guilty of all charges, Vachon-Desjardins faces a sentence of more than 11 years in jail.
