UK's Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died aged 99.

Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, died on Friday. He was 99. In a statement, the Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort of any British monarch. He served 69 years supporting the Queen and retired from the royal service in 2017.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the statement said.

It added, "The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course."

Reacting to the news, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Prince Philip inspired the lives of countless people.

"He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life," the BBC quoted him as saying.

WHO WAS PRINCE PHILIP?
Prince Philip had been a leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades. He was officially known as The Duke of Edinburgh and earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes, Reuters said in a report.

A Greek prince, he married Elizabeth in 1947 playing a key role in modernising the British monarchy in the post-World War 2 period, and behind the walls of Buckingham Palace being the one key figure the Queen could turn to and trust.

"He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years," Queen Elizabeth said in a rare personal tribute to Philip made in a speech marking their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997.

In a report, Reuters said while Prince Philip was often criticised for "his demeanour and sometimes brusque remarks", his friends said that as Queen Elizabeth II's closest confidant, Prince Philip brought "wit, impatient intelligence and unflagging energy to the monarchy".

However, in an interview with the BBC on the occasion of his 90th birthday, he did say that he struggled to find a role for himself in his early days in the Royal Family.

"There was no precedent. If I asked somebody 'what do you expect me to do?' they all looked blank - they had no idea, nobody had much idea," he had reported told BBC.
